public art

Photo copyright 2000 Gazelle

I took the above photograph for the designers of this public art project, called 'In The Eye Of The Storm.' It is located in downtown Los Angeles outside of the LAPD's 911 Communication Dispatch Center. I think it's an excellent example of well done public art - an installation that both the art educated and the masses can appreciate and learn from. The design is made of attractive and symbolic materials, it is interactive, and there's text to be read and interpreted on the plaza and the cylinder seen above. Moving within the space and the cylinder serves to illustrate the varied (and often intense) experiences of callers using the 911 phone system in Los Angeles.
