a wish for a simpler life...

Often times I daydream of trading debt, bills, insurance premiums, traffic, pollution, taxes, noise, crime, and lots of dumbasses for tradition, ritual, beauty, and a sense of connectedness to community and the elements. There's an undertow to this line of thinking, and the end result could be good or maybe not very good at all...

I doubt we could ever go back to simpler lives. But it's always possible to get more connected by exposing ourselves to the elements, exercising liberal self propulsion, and immersing ourselves into meaningful friendships with those around us.

I think a tiny percentage of people on the globe have made a shift to simpler lives. What that means could be very different in each case, but it can be done. But you're right, "we" as a culture or large tribe cannot go back - it can really only be a few isolated dropouts, each doing it their own way, ideally with family and close friends. In the meantime, though, your suggestions for connecting will have to do.

I not only think its possible but essential if a 'healthy meaningful' existence on this planet is to continue. The alternative is ever increasing technology, isolation from nature and yet more technology again to save us from the ills of this existence and as compensation for our lack of connection with nature... and on and on...
